The Golden Hinde Turns 50: How To Get Involved As A School

The 5th of April marks the 50th anniversary of The Golden Hinde’s launch. To commemorate 50 years of this historic ship, we have launched a campaign to raise funds that will help preserve this special landmark and support our educational programming.

As many of our visitors have noticed, maintenance has been taking place on The Golden Hinde since 2017.  Having just celebrated her 50th anniversary, The Golden Hinde is designated an historic vessel. To preserve her for future generations, our shipwrights and rigging specialists are working hard to ensure The Golden Hinde’s upkeep, but we need your help.

Help us celebrate this occasion by getting involved with our fundraising campaign.

Circumnavigation Challenge

The original Golden Hinde is famous for its circumnavigation of the globe. The replica has also completed one circumnavigation, as well as several Atlantic crossings and over 100,00 miles of sailing.

We invite you to undertake your own Circumnavigation Challenge of the world, your city or town, the local park, or even your school and help us raise funds so we can keep the ship open for future generations of students.

50th Anniversary School Competition

Take part in our fun and creative competition to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We are looking to create a display of student entries aboard the ship.  Win a one-hour tour for one primary and secondary class and experience our Educational Programmes

Primary Schools Competition
We are asking students to design and create a 50th birthday card for The Golden Hinde.  View the primary schools entry pack here.

Secondary Schools Competition
We are inviting secondary school students to write a poem using the theme of sailing or the sea. View the secondary schools entry pack here

Our school competitions will be judged by former crewmate and artist Zillah Richards, as well as ship navigator Jilly Francis. Our judges are looking for creativity, originality, and an expression of The Golden Hinde’s history.

Submit your entries by May 22nd 2023. The winners will be announced on May 31st 2023.

We look forward to seeing the creative submissions from your students.
