Next year marks 30 years since The Golden Hinde first arrived at St Mary Overie Dock in 1996. Since then, millions of visitors, schoolchildren, and families have stepped aboard to experience life at sea, discover the story of Sir Francis Drake’s famous circumnavigation, and take part in living history on the Thames.

To celebrate our Pearl Anniversary next year, we are launching a year-long programme of events, workshops, and community projects that will run from September 2025 to September 2026 culminating in a weekend of celebrations, and marking the occasion of the arrival of the ship sailing into the dock on 14 September 1996.

Highlights include:

30 Years in the Dock Memory Project - gathering stories, photographs, and memories from former crew, local residents, alumni, and visitors who have been part of the ship’s journey since that day in 1996.

Special Celebrations - a series of unique evenings, workshops, and performances, culminating in a large-scale VIP anniversary weekend in September 2026.

Community Partnerships - working closely with schools, residents, and local groups across Bankside and beyond to co-create events, share heritage, and celebrate the ship’s place in Southwark life.

Seasonal Events - from school holiday family workshops to the ship’s first-ever Christmas Grotto.

Annual Membership Scheme - launching late 2025, offering supporters new ways to connect with and sustain the ship’s legacy.

The campaign will also support vital fundraising for the ship’s ongoing refit, ensuring The Golden Hinde remains seaworthy for future generations. Every ticket purchased, membership joined, or event attended helps us continue to preserve this extraordinary vessel.

Our anniversary officially launched with a sold-out Heritage Open Days After Dark event on 17 September 2025, exploring the question: What does it mean to rebuild the past? in partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe. 

This marked the start of a year filled with stories, community, and celebration - climb aboard and be part of our next chapter.
