Halloween Aboard The Golden Hinde

Saturday 24 October – Sunday 1 November

11am | 12pm | 2pm | 3pm

Approx. 30 minutes | Included with general admission

This October half-term, step aboard The Golden Hinde and discover a darker side to life at sea...

From witches and strange charms to ghostly legends, sailors’ superstitions and stories of Francis Drake beyond the grave, join us for a special Halloween experience exploring some of the beliefs, fears and folklore of the Tudor world.

Your visit begins with an interactive talk in the Great Cabin, where curious objects help bring some of these strange stories and superstitions to life. After the talk, continue through the rest of The Golden Hinde on a tour of the ship, exploring above and below deck and discovering more about life aboard a Tudor galleon.

Gather in the atmospheric Great Cabin for tales of magic, mystery and misfortune, surrounded by eerie decorations inspired by the charms and protective practices of the past. Discover why sailors feared whistling aboard ship, how a stone with a hole through it might protect you from witchcraft, and why even cracking an egg could spell trouble at sea.

Hear some of the stranger legends associated with Sir Francis Drake, from rumours of a magical mirror capable of revealing enemy fleets to the story of Drake’s Drum, said to sound whenever England is in danger. There are also darker tales from the voyage itself, including the trial and execution of Thomas Doughty amid accusations of treason and witchcraft.

Visitors will also get a closer look at some of the objects, symbols and traditions once believed to offer protection against supernatural forces – including witch marks, witch bottles, hagstones and the origins of the Jack O’ Lantern.

Perfect for a spooky October half-term day out in the heart of Bankside.
