Meet the Crew: The Gunner

MTC Gunner

On a Tudor ship, the gunner had one of the most dangerous jobs on board.

A good gunner was not judged by how far they could hit a target, or how fast they could reload a cannon. Instead, they were valued for something far more important: keeping everyone safe. Loading and firing heavy guns correctly took care, patience, and experience. One mistake could lead to fire, injury, or worse.

Life as a gunner was tough. The work was physical, noisy, and often carried out in thick smoke and heat. Gunners were relied upon in battle, but they were also quick to be blamed if accidents happened. Fires and explosions were a constant risk on Tudor ships, and an inexperienced gunner was often made the scapegoat when things went wrong.

The cannons aboard The Golden Hinde are heavy cast-iron guns, typical of the period. Their weight limited how large they could be, but they were powerful at close range. Unlike later cannons, these guns did not hold heat for long, meaning they could be fired more frequently. However, every shot carried danger. If a cannon was overloaded with gunpowder, or if the cannonball did not fit properly, the gun could burst.

This is why the gunner’s role was about knowledge and caution, not speed. Each cannon was slightly different, and every shot had to be checked carefully. The gunner needed to understand their weapon inside and out.
