Why February Half-Term is the best time to explore London with your kids
Southbank: the ultimate London half-term win
If you’re looking for things to do in London during February half-term, Southbank should be right at the top of your list. It’s flat, walkable, packed with family-friendly attractions and - crucially - full of places to eat, drink and warm up when little legs need a break.
Start your day at Westminster, taking in the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben), the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. It’s the perfect place to soak up those classic London views.
Top tip: head around the back of County Hall to find a few quieter corners where you can grab a coffee away from the crowds before continuing your walk.
From here, head east along the River Thames, following the South Bank. Along the way you’ll find street performers, buskers and plenty of places to stop for food - whether you’re after a quick snack or something more substantial.
First stop: Southbank Centre & Imagine Children’s Festival
One of the highlights of February half-term on the Southbank is Southbank Centre’s Imagine Children’s Festival. Returning in 2026, the festival offers more than a week of performances, workshops and free activities designed especially for children aged 0–11 and their families.
Expect a brilliant mix of ticketed shows and free drop-in events, including:
- Horrible Histories in Concert
- CBBC favourites Andy and the Odd Socks
- Free dance sessions
- Family trails and creative activities
11–21 February 2026
It’s one of the best family-friendly events in London - and we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the wonderfully chaotic Lip Sync Brawl.
Shakespeare, ships and a taste of Elizabethan London
Continuing along the river, you’ll come to Shakespeare’s Globe - always a great shout, particularly if your children are currently studying Shakespeare at school.
And here’s where we come in. Did you know Shakespeare’s Globe and The Golden Hinde offer a joint ticket? It’s the perfect way to fully immerse yourselves in Elizabethan London, combining theatre, history and hands-on exploration aboard our historic ship.
It’s a brilliant option if you’re looking to add something truly memorable (and educational) to your Southbank half term plans.
Free family fun at Tate Modern
If you’re trying to keep costs down, Tate Modern is an excellent stop and completely free to enter. During school holidays, the gallery often runs family activities as part of UNIQLO Tate Play, Tate Modern’s free programme of art, activities and play for families of all ages.
Inspired by the artworks on display, these sessions give families new ways to get creative together and explore art in a relaxed, playful way. More activities are often announced closer to the holidays, so it’s always worth checking ahead of your visit.
Next stop: The Golden Hinde
14th Feb - 22nd Feb, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00
The next stop is yours truly - The Golden Hinde. During February half-term, we’ll be hosting our popular Meet the Crew events, where visitors have the opportunity to meet the ship’s navigator, gunner and barber surgeon, and hear first-hand about their roles and responsibilities during the voyage.
All talks and tours are included with admission, making it a brilliant value stop for curious minds.
Once you’ve explored the ship, you’re perfectly placed to warm up nearby. There are plenty of cafés and traditional public houses close by - and, of course, Borough Market is just around the corner for anyone craving street food or a sweet treat.
More maritime magic: Lunar New Year at London Museum Docklands
If you’re still not quite ready to head home, February half term brings even more family-friendly events across the city. London Museum Docklands hosts its annual Lunar New Year celebrations, with a weekend full of free entertainment including:
- Lion dances
- Ribbon dance workshops
- A silent disco
- Live performances and activities for all ages
21-22 February 2026
Free entry
Why February half term really works
February half term is one of the most underrated times to enjoy London with kids. It’s quieter than Easter or summer, packed with family-focused events, and Southbank offers the perfect balance of culture, entertainment, food and freedom to explore at your own pace.
Wrap up warm, take it slow, and let the city - and the river - do the rest.
