Women in Music on The Golden Hinde: Celebrating Women’s History Month
A historic sailing vessel might initially appear to be a male-dominated space, but in fact there are many women making up the core team aboard The Golden Hinde. From Museum Operations to Shipwrights, our team works behind the scenes to make the ship the bustling, varied, and engaging place that it is.
As we enter Women’s History Month, and with International Women’s Day just around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to introduce Callie Nestleroth, the Ship’s new Events Manager. Callie is responsible for planning, organising, and delivering the wide variety of events programme The Golden Hinde presents. A part of that program has been a growing engagement with independent music artists looking for a unique and memorable venue to present an intimate performance for their audiences. The cosy atmosphere and the acoustics of our wooden vessel offer an encounter that once experienced can become addictive.
One of our onboard regulars is particularly exciting, especially given The Golden Hinde’s history as a state sanctioned “pirate” ship. Frankie Heartless and the Heartless Rogues are an all-female presenting Sea Shanty musical group. Pirate costumes at their events are welcome and encouraged. If you’ve been curious about the Sea Shanty Phenomenon, but not sure if it’s for you, I guarantee you this one is. And where better to experience sea shanties than aboard a proper Historic Ship!
