After Dark at The Golden Hinde: What Does It Mean to Rebuild the Past?

Step aboard The Golden Hinde after hours for a special one-night-only Heritage Open Days event, launching our year-long celebration of the ship’s 30th anniversary in St Mary Overie Dock next year.

Through expert talks and discussion, we’ll explore the 2025 Heritage Open Days theme - Architecture - through the lens of reconstruction: what does it mean to rebuild the past?

In partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe and The Rose Playhouse, our panel will reflect on the creative decisions, technical challenges, and philosophical debates behind architectural reconstruction. From timber frames to theatre stages, we’ll consider questions like:

  • Where does authenticity lie - in materials, methods, or meaning?
  • How do we preserve reconstructions themselves?
  • What does it mean to build for purpose - not just display?
  • Whose history is being reconstructed, and who is it for?

Confirmed speakers include Dr Will Tosh (Director of Education - Higher Education and Research - at Shakespeare’s Globe), Jon Greenfield (Reconstruction Architect for Shakespeare’s Globe), Toby Millinder (Lead Shipwright at The Golden Hinde), and Gary Lockley (Ship’s Manager at The Golden Hinde), with support from The Rose Playhouse. Full lineup to be announced.

Doors and bar open from 6.30pm, talks start at 7pm followed by a Q&A.

Expect expert talks, a lively Q&A, and informal networking in an atmospheric setting aboard this historic ship. Booking is essential as there are limited seats in our beautiful Hold!
