Tell the surgeon to make haste

Around the Thames wharves in 18th century Southwark, foulmouthed dockers shifted heavy crates and crews unloaded the festering blubber from whale ships.

This was a smelly, dirty place, a hubbub of foul activity with outrageous licentiousness and beer a basic necessity of life. It's no surprise that accidents and illness were common.

Join the staff from the Old Operating Theatre Museum and hear why treatment at this time was often bloody and surgery before anaesthetics needed to be swift.

Come aboard from 18:30 and grab a drink from our bar.

Talk starts at 19:30.
